I am a BearMan-iac

Bearman is one of the best human beings I know. And his political cartoons are damn funny too. He is having the fourth annual fan challenge. For every thing the fans do to push the Bearman brand, he gives money to charity. I am a huge Bearman fan. HUGE!  So I saved my produce stickers for, like, 14 years, laboriously photographed each one, and then created this pathetic tribute mosaic of Bearman’s avatar with a free program called AndreaMosaic. (Warning: don’t use the Mac version, at least not on Lion. But the PC version works fine.) AndreaMosaic is easy to use, but the quality of your mosaic depends very much on what you feed it. As you can see. UPDATE: AndreaMosaic Pro Beta works just fine on the Mac. The latest and greatest installer works just fine.

Hey, they don’t call me a “talentless hack” for nothing. Anyway, visit Bearman’s site for ways you can make Bearman empty his pockets.

Stumptown 2012

I went to Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland on Saturday the 28th. This fest is really all about comics, and not so much about gaming. It was a great little bike ride up the Springwater Corridor, on past OMSI and then up the east side of the river on the Esplanade. It was really cool to marinate in such a sea of comics enthusiasm. I got to meet some of my Northwest role models, like Erika Moen and Peter Bagge and I found a whole bunch of new web comics which I will eventually get around to reading. I actually saw a Cintiq but I’m happy with my little Wacom Bamboo for the moment. I also met several local Portland creators and got a few underground books. For the sake of the planet I try to minimize dead tree media even though deep down I’m old school and prefer the physicality of a book. That’s a picture of me with Bridgett Spicer, author of Squid Row Comics. We’re just better eye candy than the boys.

Skateboard tow

Wouldn’t it be fun to attach a rope to a pickup and let it tow you on your skateboard? Oh yeah, it’s a barrel of laughs until the skateboard slips out from under you. Do not try this at home. My daughter Ellie and I conceived and staged this photo for a competition in the “Jackass” genre, which she totally won. I thought it might amuse you while you wait for the next comic.

Bee Girl Explained

Jun06

You might have noticed that my avatar for commenting is a runner being pursued by bees. That stems from an incident in 2009 when I was attacked by a swarm of pissed-off bees while out running and I’m not really sure why. Anyway 50 or so stings was enough venom to put me into anaphylactic shock. I had to go to the hospital and I was brought back from death by two hits of epi in the ambulance. Before that, a bee or wasp sting had been no big deal. It would sting and itch a bit and then get better. The doc at the hospital recommended I carry epipens with me everywhere in case I was super sensitive stemming from that incident. So I had epipens in my kit in when I was stung by an exotic Amazonian jungle wasp, but there was no big deal from that, just the normal localized swelling and itching. But the true test is being re-exposed to exactly the same substance, so you guessed it I had a new encounter with my friend apis mellifera. The good news is it didn’t put me into anaphylactic shock but the bad news is that I am much more sensitive to bee venom than previously. My foot swelled up to the size of a football and for about a whole day after I didn’t feel too good. The moral of this tale is Respect the bee!

Being “nice”

May04

In the never ending quest for self promotion, I occasionally read blogging articles. Like anyone, I’m a sucker for lists, so I fell into this article: 10 signs your content sucks It is so radically different from the Eleven signs your blog sucks article I wrote three years ago. My article was broader, and mentioned a lot of sidebar type things people do to cause blog suckage, whereas bad blogger focuses strictly on the content itself, which is supposedly what it’s all about, right?

I guess points #2 and #9 in the bad blogger article were a bit troublesome for me — the ones having to do with your friends not sharing your content in a big way. There are ways of rationalizing it:

  1. My demographic isn’t really into that, they barely get facebook.
  2. Comics are kinda like porn — educated adults are embarrassed to admit to their friends that they read ’em.
  3. They can’t find the share buttons on my site.
  4. They are too busy.
  5. Maybe they are sharing my links and I just don’t know it.

None of those rationalizations stand up to scrutiny. Of course there are always naysayers that hate anything that doesn’t conform to their narrow expectations, and I’ve had my share of them — we all have — and we just have to pity them their negative hate-filled little lives. But on the other hand there are an awful lot of web comics that are actually pretty bad. I don’t crap all over them, I just don’t return to them.

Here is why I don’t think Tix-Comix completely sucks and keep doing this:

  1. Most of the comments people leave on Tix-Comix are engaged and engaging. I’ve made it easy to comment by remembering your data and not requiring a captcha and using comment LUV. Of course I get spam but my signal to noise ratio on comments is actually pretty good.
  2. Readership, subscriptions, and real (as opposed to incentivized) visits all going up, slowly to be sure, but up.
  3. We have a high ratio of repeat traffic.

On the other hand intrepid regular commenters know that if they leave a clever comment, my visitors are more likely to check out their link. So like the post said, if they just comment for the link and won’t share it to their friends, it might be that something is wrong. And some friends just post comments to be “nice” but it doesn’t occur to them to spread it.

So friends, you tell ME.

  • Does Tix-Comix resonate with you at least some of the time?
  • Would you be embarrassed for your friends to catch you reading it? If so why?
  • Do you ever publically admit you like a Tix-Comix strip by facebook share or a stumble?
  • Have you friended me on stumbleupon? Probably not. But that is my fault and I’m fixing it now. Here is my stumbleupon. OK no excuses.
  • If you have suggestions to make Tix-Comix better you can comment them, under a fake email if you want. It’ll get spammed, but I’ll review spam and despam it if it’s useful.
  • If you do decide to share something, comment and let me know what and where

I don’t sell anything at this moment, I accept PW ads from other webcomics and related just to mix things up a little, and I’m not seriously looking for money (though I wouldn’t turn it down) — what I most want is to build a community of thoughtful individuals who share my somewhat off-the-wall views on life. If you truly enjoy any of the comics please don’t just keep it between us! Now go to the archives and find your fave. The handy dandy small share strip at the bottom of each strip is not there for decoration.
