I love the bossa nova tunes of Tom Jobim, especially when performed by a master like Gal Costa. Wave is one of my favorites. Learning a tune in all twelve keys is a lot of extra work, and the truth is that jazz standards are more commonly played in just one or two keys so why bother with keys that you’re never going to use? I can do Wave in both my transpose key and the original key. This is Wave by Tom Jobim, recorded by Gal Costa
I was waiting for the singer to yell at the piano player for playing in the wrong key. haha
It sorta seems like you are in the wrong key when you start this tune cuz you start on 6 over a IV-13. From the intro vamp you have to be careful or you will start on the wrong note. But once you land on the nice solid 5 of the I chord you know you are fine. That's how I start it, I think that easy note and then work backwards & figure out how to get there.
Ain't it great when you get one back on someone after they've forgotten what they said ages ago???
Yep, 🙂 Especially the Dude. And I don't think he forgot. He is just OK with being inconsistent. RE: moderation: The blog is set up to be suspicious of new email addresses. And you change things up almost more often than I change underwear. I'm almost ready to go to intense debate. What do guys think?
Oh. my comment went to moderation??? Probably because of my changed email I guess…
I have about 5 keys on my chain. I also know about 5 chords on guitar but they are all letters.
Yeh that's how English speaking ppl learn guitar chords. Some learn 'em in in solfege with fixed Do which is functionally equivalent. Since there is such confusion in solfege about whether Do is fixed or not, they reverted to the numbering system of figured bass from a couple of centuries ago. It is more concise and key-independent, but not yet the standard.
Back atcha indeed. I love it. Turn about is fair play.
Loved the video too. Didn't understand a word of it, but the music and her voice are awesome.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
I'm sure you can find it in English. The title is generally translated as "Wave" and it's composer is Tom Jobim. Trust me, although the English lyrics to this aren't bad, the Portuguese lyrics are better.
It's all very well for well taught, anally retentive piano players to transpose everything into the key of A flat – it can be a real bummer for an average guitarist then forced to figure out – and play! – the IVmaj7 (which, if I've got it right is D flat maj7 :-)) in such a key …
Just sayin' …
Indeed Francis, you are correct the IV of Ab is Db. And you are also correct that I tend to be somewhat anal, I guess a kinder way of saying it is that I like precision and excellence and I hear it if someone is fouling up a chord. (I always assume it's me!) The dude is trying to make everybody above average. Average guitarists indeed prefer keys named after white keys on the piano and some don't even like F and B.
But I never bother about guitarists because for them there's always the capo. Electric pianos can also be autotuned to any key but I tried that once and nearly threw up. I mean it. The dissonance between what I was seeing and what I was hearing gave me full blown nausea.
Oh F and B are no problem and you're right, the capo does solve a lot of problems. Still, even with the capo you still have to transpose sometimes – otherwise you finish up playing things far to high up the neck of the guitar.
I guess there's always a difference betwen music composed on the guitar and that composed on the piano – a case of preference for different kinds of progressions I suppose. As a very average guitarist, I sometimes get frustrated when I sit down to work out a song by Elton John or Billy Joel. That said, the availability of tabs for almost everything on the internet has made all this much easier – the down side, I suppose, is that more and more guitarists have got lazy and ignorant about the basic theory behind the music. Luckily I had my mother – a classical piano and voice teacher – who taught me the basics 🙂
I couldn't agree with ya more, Colleen. You gotta get funky with it, all 12 keys must be dealt with. 🙂
I won't be able to hear the video until I get home, but I'll be sure to check it out.
Dear Colleen, Don't know too much about different keys, but thought the comic was cute. Thank you for your visits to my blog Colleen and your kind comments. Blessings, Catherine
That is one fantastic singer, even though i didn't understand a single word.
I like the feel of the song
Ha,ha,ha. Funny Stuff!
Dear Colleen, I enjoyed this comic since both my daughter and I enjoy playing the piano. Thank you for visiting my blog and for your kind comments. Oh, yes I have thought about Foodbuzz, but haven't joined as of yet. Blessings, Catherine xo
That's so aweseome that you play the piano Catherine. I gotta say, music is the only thing that keeps me sane in this insane world. It's truly a blessing.
Good song. I don't usually listen to this kind of music, but I'm beginning to like it.
Backatcha!
Nice 🙂
Hi Colleen, How are you? I love bossa nova tunes to. They make you feel happy. Have a wonderful, blessed weekend. Thank you for stopping by and visiting and for your kind comments. Catherine xo
I have little to no musical skills past decent karaoke so I admire just about anything anyone can do lol.
Well for some reason I can't karaoke to save my life. My daughter keeps encouraging me but it's just not my peeps. The last time I did it there was a pure percussion intro now how am I supposed to know what note they expect me to start on!
Like the way that you have the comic strip and the post coinciding … 🙂
When is the new comic up?
Aiming for 19th June 2011 Goeber. And you'll see the reason for the schedule slip when you read it. Of course I don't expect anyone to believe the excuse — it is pretty incredible!
It's the 19th. Hmm. Maybe tomorrow.
