I have always thought Qadaffi (Gadaffi, Khadaffi or whatever) was bonkers. He can’t last much longer as supreme poobah of Libya and I won’t cry when he dies, whether it be an overly dramatic suicide, or he gets taken out by the triumphant march of the rebels, or they merely put him in an old dictators home where he can bask in his former glory. Just the visual gestalt of this late portrait made me think that this deluded botoxified geezer was trying to emulate a Che Guevara look.
Was Che really that great either??
You did a really good job on Khadaffi (didn't we use to spell it with a K back in the 80's?). And like Bearman said, I've read that Che wasn't as big of a selfless hero as most of his press reads.
I had a little technological help with the portrait of Gadaffi or however you want to spell it. I can not claim it as 100% original. It was heavily based on a tracing of a filtered digital photo.
Regardless of what you think of his politics, Che was certainly better looking than Qadaffi. Of course Che was martyred if you will at about age 40 so didn't have a chance to get all geezed out. Check out the movie Motorcycle Diaries. Che is a paradox to me — on the one hand he did heinous things in the name of the struggle but on the other hand things were so unbelievably horrible for the poor in those days in most of Latin America that I guess he convinced people that they had nothing to lose. Qadaffi, for all his rhetoric about loving his country, has never got down in the trenches with the poor and sick like Che did. And all the botox in the world only makes Qaddafi (the IPA purist's preferred spelling) seem more and more deranged.
Great cartoon, Colleen!
Your last comment reminds me of Pink Floyd's "Fletcher Mermorial home – (I hope this hmtl link works!) Pink Floyd
Glad you enjoyed it Francis. I usually don't do political, though I do stray into social commentary sometimes. And thanks for the Pink Floyd link. I remember the song, but hadn't seen the video.
Great likenesses Colleen. I thought it was spelf Gadaffi. I have seen images of the Che guy on TV before but no idea who he actually is
I thought Qaddaffi would go down a lot sooner after this cartoon came out than he actually did. For a while I thought all the press about Libya being 80% "liberated" might have been bunkus. But honestly, a sewer pipe? How poetic!
