You DO NOT want to dump an active database that people are connected to. Instead if it you have a master/slave setup ( the slave a passive copy) you dump the slave. The master will be locked out from the slave while you do the dump, but that’s OK because it just queues up the updates and does them when the dump is finished. Yet another reason why doing such a long running process is a bad idea. There can be no synchronized backup of the master database while the dump is running. We’re talking DAYS! Names, of course, mean nothing. This is why Tix verified that the server named “master” was indeed the actual master with live connections and the server named “slave” was in fact the slave. So imagine her surprise when Tim called and informed her that she had locked out the MASTER database. This comic puts a bit of a mystery on our hands. How could that have happened?
Could they have set it so they're somehow running the database off the slave?
Only thing I know about "masters and servants" is a Felecia mode song
Can I say how much I hate iPad autocorrect. I wrote depeche mode not felicia
Our Sales Rep at work was recently given an ipad & had a lt of issues trying to figger out how to use it.
Note: She is blonde. Need I say more???
Did this really happen? Yipes.
Maybe they make some "class revolution" in the database system, so the master became slave and the slave became master.
Nope, guys. It boils down much more human nature than that. All will be revealed in the next Farty Poop strip. And Bearman, can I say how much I envy all you people who have ipads, autocorrect notwithstanding.
Maybe the Master Data base was actually named "Slave" for some strange reason…
It was, Tony. At the moment our hero started the dump that was exactly the situation. But half an hour before, she verified to make sure everything really was as one would expect. So the question is: Who changed it and why?
Hmmm… The plot thickens…
duh… I have no slaves around here, or masters that I am aware of? so does that tell you how little I know about computers!?? is this for a single computer or a network? ugh! now I am confused more than ever@@! thanks for stopping by & linking up :0 looks I could learn a few things from here & I recognize a few friends that commented 😉
The Farty Poop chronicles definitely refer to a network. You do have slaves though, even on your home computer, but when things are going well they are so quiet you don't even know they are there. Sometimes they fight with each other and cause your computer to crash.
