I wondered how much taking my dog on a leash slowed down my splits on a five mile run. So I decided to capture some data. You may not think 27 seconds per mile is a big deal, but actually, it is. Anyway I break down the math for you here and illustrate the results in an infographic -oid manner. Clip and save this handy dandy chart! (and it is a great excuse to use for your terrible run times.)
Damn Dog,
I don’t see the problem you are having Missus Colleen. These are all normal doggy things that are essential on any outing. Thank you for this great instructional chart. I am pleased to know I am pooping & peeing right.
To her credit she usually gets the pooping done early on. But why can’t she just shoot out all her pee at once and be done with it.
I never realised walking a dog could be such an adventure! 😀
if (dog.gender == male) { sniffs/mile = infinity }
else { walking = beneficial }
Indeed. and probably the PEEING too. My all time favorite Larson is the one where the dog is outside sheepishly drinking from the hose and Mrs. Dog (apron, beehive hairdo and hornrim glasses, hands on hips) says, Hmph, going out with the boys again? Vipey runs out of pee by about the 4th mile (6 KM) unless our route happens to take us beside any bodies of water, then she refills.
That WAS a good Larson comic (as well as many other of Gary’s works)!
My dog does the same thing! I think they have a handbook…
If your calculations are correct, whenever I run a mile, I must be taking two dozen dogs with me…
Hmmmmm… Well, multiple dogs is definitely slower than one, doo due to interactions between the dogs and leash tangling etc. But what would you run it in without any dogs?
Without the dogs, I can’t run it. I need them to pull 😉
Vipey always wants to pull. TWO EXCEPTIONS. Going uphill, that’s when the serious sniffage happens. and the other exception is when I’ wish she would pull in the direction I’m going.
27 seconds per mile would mean I could run a mile in 12 minutes and 27 seconds.
You need a greyhound with blinders and a diaper.
He looks like he is enjoying running with you. 🙂
The dog enjoys the run very much indeed. You or I would not enjoy being yanked around by the neck, but the dog just thinks it’s fun.
Maybe you should consider purchasing your dog an iPod to help distract him from all of these other time-killers. 😀
How do you put earbuds on a dog?
