Don’t you just hate circular logic? You can’t get a job unless you have experience, and of course how do you get experience without a job? You can’t get a promotion unless you’re assigned higher level work, which you won’t be at your current level, and any thing you do is at your current level by definition. Tix works her ass off playing organ at church but her pay seems not to at all related to how well she does the job, but to little check boxes on a piece of paper. One of my pet peeves is people who conveniently use little check boxes and heirarchical power structures as an excuse to avoid doing what is right and just. Who is taking bets on whether the Marjean the accounts lady has even been to a service that Tix played for? You will see this theme pop up again with different twists in this comic because I really have a bug up my butt about it. The huge irony is that churches are always ranting about exploitation of the poor and powerless. My fluorescent white ass! Maybe they should read and heed the book of Deuteronomy.
Circular logic,
Sounds like most unions. Can't get in unless you have work, can't get work unless you are in.
Catch 22!
Your flourescent white ass! I like that. Can I use it? If I do I'll give you credit.
Isn\’t your ass as brilliantly fluorescent white as mine, my sistah? Use your own fluorescent ass! I need mine to sit on and to poop out of. But you can borrow my Bees T-shirt any time because I have other shirts.
Also churches don't have to pay unemployment insurance.
Really? Even on full timers? Anyway, we have ways to make our own justice.
Yep; a few years ago I was teaching at a small private school that had reconstituted as a "church" to save money and other requirements. When I was laid off due to low enrollment in my grade (and I couldn't complain because I had championed the rule under which I was later laid off) I qualified for unemployment under state law, but there was zero $ in the account to actually pay me.
When I was laid off (from an actual job not a church gig) I collected UI from the state. I was told that the funds come from the UI insurance that employers pay into a slush fund that the state looks after and that every time they lay someone off their premiums go up. I don't think a school should be allowed to call itself a church.
You can’t get a job unless you have experience, and of course how do you get experience without a job? It's horrible. I guess you have to work for free first to get experience.
I once offered to intern free so I could get experience in a closely related field to one I had already 10 years experience in. No, I was told, you have to be on the payroll because of insurance reasons. OK, so put me on the payroll at $0. No, because you don\’t have experience (in this exact technical thing and none of your related skills & experience are relevant.) Then two weeks later the son of the vice provost of the university (a lad with no experience of any kind whatsoever) was put on the payroll at non $0. Take-away: Rules and policies exist in order to exclude the \”wrong people.\” They are waived for the \”right people.\” That seems to be the only way anyone moves forward.
Grrrr! Catch-22's make you wanna just slap somebody silly sometimes. I run into stuff like that too much. It's damned if we, damned if we don't. Thanks for making this comic to bring it to light! 🙂
and I don't like how intense debate is insertslashing my apostrophe's. Stop that damn it!
"Tix-Comix" has been included in the A Sunday Drive for this week. I hope this helps to attract even more new visitors to here.

I found that last time I was out of work for a while & wanting to try something different on the employment front. I couldn't get a job in something I hadn't done before to get experience without experience. It was so frustrating
I wouldn't expect anyone to pay me to learn, but they might let me do support work at a reduced wage or apprentice and do an unpaid internship. Churches only tolerate musicians because it's a proven fact that if you have decent music, people put more $$ in the collection plate. Otherwise, they'd probably eliminate it from their budget as fru-fru.
